Yoga for Mental Well-being

The Ministry of Ayush promotes yoga, mindful breathing and meditation through #AyushForMentalHealth to support mental well-being ahead of World Mental Health Day.

New Delhi: The Ministry of Ayush is highlighting the role of yoga in promoting mental well-being through its #AyushForMentalHealth campaign, encouraging people to incorporate mindful movement, conscious breathing and meditation into their daily routines.

As World Mental Health Day approaches, the Ministry is emphasising the importance of taking time for self-care, relaxation and activities that support a balanced mind and body. Yoga, which combines physical postures, breathing techniques, meditation and moments of stillness, offers an integrated approach to overall well-being.

The campaign aims to raise awareness about traditional wellness practices and their potential contribution to mental health as part of a balanced lifestyle.

Yoga: An Integrated Approach to Mental Well-being

Yoga brings together different practices that can help individuals develop greater awareness of their bodies, breathing patterns and mental states. Regular yoga practice may help manage everyday stress, improve relaxation and support emotional well-being.

Mindful movement encourages individuals to pay attention to their physical sensations and movements. Conscious breathing, meanwhile, helps practitioners focus on their breath and can promote a sense of calm. Meditation and moments of stillness provide opportunities to pause, observe thoughts and cultivate mindfulness.

These practices can be adapted to different age groups and fitness levels, making yoga an accessible option for people seeking to establish healthier daily routines.

Ministry of Ayush Highlights Importance of Self-care

Through the #AyushForMentalHealth campaign, the Ministry of Ayush is encouraging people to make mental well-being an important part of their everyday lives.

The message calls on individuals to pause, breathe consciously and make time for their well-being, particularly as World Mental Health Day approaches.

The initiative also highlights the role of traditional Indian wellness practices in encouraging a holistic understanding of health, in which physical, mental and emotional well-being are interconnected.

Simple practices, such as setting aside a few minutes for breathing exercises, gentle yoga or meditation, can help individuals create regular opportunities for relaxation and self-awareness.

World Mental Health Day and the Need for Awareness

World Mental Health Day is observed annually on October 10 to raise awareness of mental health issues and promote efforts to support mental well-being.

The occasion provides an opportunity for governments, healthcare professionals, organisations and communities to highlight the importance of mental health awareness, early support and access to appropriate care.

Yoga and meditation may complement broader mental health and self-care strategies. However, they should not be considered substitutes for professional assessment or treatment when someone is experiencing persistent psychological distress or a mental health condition.

Making Well-being Part of Everyday Life

The Ministry of Ayush’s campaign encourages people to develop simple, sustainable wellness habits rather than treating self-care as an occasional activity.

Practising gentle yoga, focusing on breathing, meditating for a few minutes and maintaining a regular routine can help individuals make time for themselves amid the demands of daily life.

Through #AyushForMentalHealth, the Ministry is bringing attention to yoga as one approach to supporting mental well-being and encouraging people to prioritise a healthier balance between mind and body.

As the world observes World Mental Health Day, the message is straightforward: pause, breathe and make time for your well-being.
